My Night with the Merlion

Two weeks ago, when I first entered in the Merlion Hotel, Tatzu Nishi’s art installation that is part of the Singapore Biennale, it triggered some childish instincts in me and I wanted to jump around on the bed. Unlike the millions of tourists that come to Singapore and pose by the statue, I’ve never been that enamored with the half fish-half lion beast. But then again, I have never been up the Eiffel Tower despite living in Paris for over 20 years. Buildings and monuments become so much a part of our visual landscape we barely noticed them after a while, which is exactly what Nishi is trying to change with his installations. Shin Sung Hy': Weaving Paint into Space

Throughout his career, Korean artist Shin Sung Hy (1948–2009) questioned painting's fundamental nature—canvas, support, and paint—through material experimentation that transformed flat surfaces into sculptural objects. FOCUS Art Fair Returns to London with Contemporary Asian Art

Jaejun Lee Europe's only international art fair dedicated to contemporary Asian art is back at the Saatchi Gallery from 16–19 October 2025. Now in its 4th UK edition, FOCUS Art Fair will showcase work by more than 50 artists from across Asia and its diaspora, spanning countries including China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, and India. This year's edition features over 30 galleries, from One East Asia in Singapore to Hanmi Gallery in London and Seoul. Highlighted artists for 2025 include two distinguished Korean artists: Meekyoung Shin and Jaejun Lee . Shin creates sculptures of Chinese porcelain and Buddha figures —but makes them entirely from soap, exploring ideas of impermanence and cultural change. Lee works with actual porcelain, mixing traditional techniques with contemporary forms and glazes to examine themes of repetition and time. Helen Britton, The Artist Jeweller

From a young age, Helen Britton used art as a form of communication and was soon making jewellery. She still has a cow horn bracelet she made when she was 12 and some earrings made from old beads and fuse wire. As an artist-jeweller, Britton approaches her practice without distinguishing between forms of creative production: “Some bodies of work contain jewellery, sculpture and drawings; some only one or another — it depends on what I am trying to say.” Britton is one of the world’s most established artist-jewellers and is known for creating colourful pieces that are just as likely to include recycled plastics as precious stones. “Preciousness is a construct and culturally driven. All materials are interesting and carry their stories with them,” she says. “I choose the materials because of what they have to say and for no other reason.” Over the years, she has set blackened silver rings with diamonds and sapphires, or combined silver and pearls with plastic or glass. Painted Threads, Hidden Truths: Abi Dionisio at FOCUS London

At this year's FOCUS Art Fair London at the Saatchi Gallery, Abi Dionisio's mini-exhibition When Threads Take Turns stands out immediately. Her paintings are trompe l'œil works that look like embroidered fabric at first glance—you have to do a double take to realize you're looking at paint on canvas. It's a clever trick, but it's also the key to understanding what she's actually doing. Dionisio pairs small, detailed embroideries with large-scale paintings that reproduce the reverse side of the stitched work. From the back of an embroidery, you see thread knots, loose ends, and the structural work that holds the image together. That's what she paints. The gesture is simple but profound: she's showing us that meaning exists on both sides. The finished, polished surface tells only half the story.
