Zao Wou-Ki Untitled 1960 etching and aquatint Zao Wou-Ki occupies a rare position in twentieth-century abstraction: a Chinese-born artist fully at home in Paris, yet one who never abandoned the visual memory of his early training in ink and calligraphy. His work synthesised Eastern technique with European modernism, creating a vocabulary entirely his own. When Artists Turned to the Fan: The Met Revisits a 19th-Century Obsession

In the late 19th century, European artists found unexpected freedom in a surprisingly modest format. Edgar Degas sketched dancers across crescent-shaped compositions meant to echo the sweep of a folding fan; Camille Pissarro experimented with pastoral scenes that curved gently outward, as if opening toward the viewer; others played with metallic pigments, feathers, or lacquer, borrowing directly from the vocabulary of fan makers. Painted Threads, Hidden Truths: Abi Dionisio at FOCUS London

At this year's FOCUS Art Fair London at the Saatchi Gallery, Abi Dionisio's mini-exhibition When Threads Take Turns stands out immediately. Her paintings are trompe l'œil works that look like embroidered fabric at first glance—you have to do a double take to realize you're looking at paint on canvas. It's a clever trick, but it's also the key to understanding what she's actually doing. Dionisio pairs small, detailed embroideries with large-scale paintings that reproduce the reverse side of the stitched work. From the back of an embroidery, you see thread knots, loose ends, and the structural work that holds the image together. That's what she paints. Taking Photography to New Heights

In 1858, Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, also known as Nadar, rose 80 meters above the small French village of Petit-Becetre in a hot air balloon and captured the earliest recorded aerial photograph. Two years later James Wallace Black repeated the feat on the other side of the world, taking photographs of Boston from Samuel King’s hot air balloon the “Queen of the Air.” Other early aerial-photography pioneers experimented with kites and carrier pigeons to carry their cameras up in the air using a timer to take a shot over which they had no control. With the outbreak of World War I, the development of aerial photography intensified as the images provided useful intelligence gathering opportunities and by the end of the war purpose-built cameras could be placed in the floor of military aircraft to capture multiple shot beyond enemy lines.
