Vietnam Voices @ Tobin Ohashi Gallery, Tokyo

Tran Trong Vu

Three Vietnamese artists (Tran Trong Vu, Nguyen Thanh Truc and Giang Nguyen) are having an exhibition at Tobin Ohashi Gallery in Tokyo.

Tran Trong Vu
Tran Trong Vu is an artist based right outside Paris who has just been awarded this year's Jackson Pollock-Lee Krasner award. He came to France in 1989 after receiving a scholarship from the French government, and then sought political asylum. His father, the dissident writer and poet, Tran Dan, lived most of his life under house arrest. Vu's works often criticize Vietnamese society, though it appears naive, almost Pop art in style.

Tran Trong Vu
Many of his paintings use red and yellow, the colors of the Vietnamese flag, that recalls the style of the Vietnamese old propaganda poster. but the yellow faces also allude to the racism he's encountered in Western society.  His faces, which seems to stare at you, are often very similar, alluding to the anonumity and comformity of his subjects.

Giang Nguyen
Abstract artist Giang Nguyen has been selected for the Watarase Artist in Residence this year.
