This new exhibition about one of the most important artists of the late 19th century Vincent Van Gogh is more a sensorial experience than an exhibition per say. There isn't a single painting in sight, instead get ready for a giant slide show that immerses you inside his paintings. Over 3000 images based on 100 Van Gogh documents (paintings and writings) are projected in a 30 minute loop on different walls.
Some of the images are just details that you probably would overlook in a painting at first glance. Some are moving images (stars in a night sky), others appears to build up as the artist is just painting them. The whole show is set to beautiful evocative music by Satie, Debussy and Bach (amongst others) which give the whole experience an important additional depth. Whether you know anything about this artist or not, you are bound to be taken by this experience that make you look at Van Gogh work in a different perspective.
The exhibition showcases images from his most prolific decade from 1880 to 1890, including the last ominous painting he ever produces, black crows circling in a wheat field. There are also plenty of old black and white photos that set the mood of the period.
