Opening - Cai Guangbin @ The Luxe Art Museum

The tradition of Chinese ink painting is alive and kicking in contemporary art, with artists giving it a twist. Cai Guangbin has been exploring new effects of tone, light and shadow, influenced by the visual images of photography. The blurry faces of his Window Series are disturbing, haunting, influenced by the faces living in the crowded buildings of Shanghai , where he lives. His new show opens at the Luxe Art Museum in Singapore on Dec 17.

News - Behind the Ullens sale at Sotheby's

The Art Newspaper is running a very interesting interview with Chinese collector Guy Ullens stating that his dream of running a Chinese art museum is over and that he's looking to hand over the management of his UCCA gallery in Beijing to “long-term partners” and divest himself of the institution. He indicated that the Apr 3 sale at Sotheby's Hong Kong will just be the first of many. Once he has done this, he says he intends to spend more time on his charitable education work in Nepal and return to collecting young artists, with his focus now on Indian rather than Chinese artists.

33 Auction to hold Auction May 5 in Singapore

33 Auction will be holding an evening sale of modern and contemporary Asian art on May 5 offering 83 lots by South-East Asian and Chinese artists, with a total pre-sale estimate of 3.5-5 million Singapore dollars ($2.8-$4.05 million). David Fu, specialist at 33 Auction noted that following the strong interest shown at its la st auction in Singapore earlier this year , the auction house is offering 30 percent more works than it had at its January sale. Highlights of the upcoming sale are WuGuanzhong’s “Willow Tree,” an ink and color on rice paper which displays the Chinese artist’s gentle fusion of Eastern and Western impressionistic styles, and “Horse and the Sun,” a strong oil on canvas work by Indonesian expressionist master Affandi, known for his technique of painting directly from the tube. Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker — Asia’s First Major Retrospective

Zao Wou-Ki Untitled 1960 etching and aquatint Zao Wou-Ki occupies a rare position in twentieth-century abstraction: a Chinese-born artist fully at home in Paris, yet one who never abandoned the visual memory of his early training in ink and calligraphy. His work synthesised Eastern technique with European modernism, creating a vocabulary entirely his own. From December 13, 2025 to May 3, 2026, M+ in Hong Kong presents Zao Wou-Ki: Master Printmaker , Asia's first major exhibition dedicated entirely to the artist's graphic works. While Zao is often celebrated for his monumental canvases, this retrospective repositions his work on paper as a laboratory of invention—revealing a practice as exploratory and rigorous as his painting.
