Les Maries du Cirque
Samsul Arifin
United Asian Auctioneers (UA) is a consortium of four of Asia's leading Asian art auctioneers: The Asian Art Auction Alliance, the overseas arm of Japan's Shinwa Art Auction, Korea's K-Auction, China's Beijing Hanhai Auction Co. and Singapore's One East Larasati. May 28th will be their fifth auction together in Hong Kong and they are offering a few interesting blue chips: Les Maries du Cirque 1980 by Marc Chagall (valued at $1.4-$1.79 million and feeling distinctively lonely amongst mainly Asian offerings) and Les Poissons Rouges by Le Mayeur de Merpres, which I find quite unusual because of the very slim figures. Amongst the up and coming artists, Samsul Arifin's Sacremental brought a smile.
Chan Kwang-Young
Bae Chanhyo
I found the selection of Korean artists particularly strong with beautiful works by video artist Lee Lee-Nam (one of my favorite) and Chan Kwang-Young (which you will recognize from my banner). Old masters such as Kim Tschang-yeul and Lee Ufan are represented along with sculptor Kim Hyunsoo and up and coming photographer Bae Chanhyo.
