Eric Chan @ Chan Hampe Galleries, Singapore

Chrysanthemum Glory, 2009
Chan Hampe Galleries is presenting a small survey exhibition of Malaysian artist Eric Chan's art practice over the last 5 years, which will run until Nov 5. It will be be followed by "WANTED: possession and rejection," another exhibition by the same artist , this time of new works.

Amongst the works featured in the mini-retrospective are the artist's signature floral paintings.

The young artist has already had exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Jakarta, London, Australia and Dubai and his works have been auctioned at Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

While he made his name with his slightly blurred floral paintings that looked like photographs taken through a diffused lens, I much prefer the new direction he took a couple of years ago of using reverse negative effect on portraits, stripping the figures to the bare essential as if X-raying them.

One of my favorite pieces of his is currently on show in the art gallery of the Louis Vuitton Maison at MBS (see below).
