The Yogyakarta-based husband and wife duo, Indieguerillas, have long shown an interest in Javanese folklore and contemporary urban culture. In their new exhibition, Happy Victims at Valentine Willie Fine Art, the duo comments on our social obsession with brands and consumerism, using a mix of urban aesthetics and traditional Javanese motifs. By lifting and restyling Javanese folklore and wayang (shadow puppetry) Indieguerillas display their sense of cultural pride whilst trying to appeal to younger audiences not to forget their own history.
