Contemporary Ink Auction at Sotheby’s Oct 4

 Demand for contemporary ink artworks has been rising in the last three years and Sotheby’s is dedicating an auction to the subject matter on October 4.

The sale will cover five decades of ink paintings with many fresh-to-market works, a mixture of early styles and later works by established artists like Li Huayi, Liu Dan, Lui Shoukwan, and Zeng Xiaojun, highlighting the spectrum of innovation in ink art, as well as the evolution in individual artistic styles over time.

This sale includes a collection mainly acquired in the 1980s, presenting pioneering works by C.C. Wang, Chen Chi-kwan, Ho Huaishuo, Hung Hoi, Li Huayi, Liu Kuo-sung, Lui Shou-kwan, and Wucius Wong.

Leading the sale will be Liu Guosong’s “Blue Moon Landscape,” 1969/1990, an ink, color, and collage on paper with an estimate of $520,000‑645,000, and Li Huayi’s “Pines in Pureland Mist,” 2012, with an estimate of $426,000‑465,000.

In total, 95 lots will be offered with an overall estimate of $3.9‑5.4 million.
